Caramelized Onion Hummus

A slightly sweet twist on the traditional hummus recipe.


  • 2 large onions
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • pinch of salt
  • 2 cans (3 cups) chickpeas
  • 1 ½ cups water
  • ¾ cup olive oil
  • ¼ cup sesame seeds
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1/2 tsp salt


  1. Once the onions are caramelized, place them and the rest of the ingredients in a high-powered blender (I am a huge fan of the vitamix!). Use the instructions for your blender. With the Vitamix, turn on low, crank up the dial, then flip the switch for high power. Use the tamper until the hummus is velvety smooth.
