Anti-inflammatory turmeric smoothie

Recipe creation is a lot like song writing. Just like songs, some recipes begin with a simple thought that shows up one day. This thought or song is mulled over and refined several times. A grocery list is developed to buy the necessary ingredients. The song or recipe is tested, adjusted, and re-tested again and again, to perfection. Or maybe the recipe starts with leftover ingredients in the fridge. Like a songwriter who has been hired to write about a specific topic, the artist is given very specific material from which to create something beautiful. These are often some of my favourite … Read More

It’s starting to warm up and really feel like Spring. That means it’s time to ditch the hot drinks and bring out the cold ones! Smoothies, that is. Or Vietnamese Iced Coffee (healthified slightly!). Or  Copycat Orange Julius (healthified a lot!). Consider this a good Spring transition drink. You’ve been enjoying your Winter Chai lattes and still have some concentrate left in the fridge. But you’re ready to move on and embrace the Spring. This smoothie is an edible way to bridge the seasons. This smoothie is silky smooth, earthy, spicy, and creamy. Not to mention… amazing, fantastic, and deee-licious! (in the words of … Read More

DIY smoothie booster

When I make a smoothie I find myself hauling out the Tupperware containers that hold my health-boosting ingredients, and scooping out a little from this one and a little from that one. The other day it occurred to me that it would be much more efficient to combine them all together into one powerful health-booster! That way, when I want to make a smoothie, I only need to take out ONE container and ONE scoop. Admittedly this is pretty low on the genius scale of ideas, but it sure is a time saver! That’s the framework. Here’s what to actually buy at the store to get … Read More

Chai Concentrate

Oh the chai latte. I realize I’m about 15 years behind on this food trend. I mean, you know something is no longer “in” when your local Costco stops carrying it.  But I still love, love, love, Chai Lattes! They have never gone away in my books.   Maybe 15 years is enough time to bring something back! Are you with me? We could have a Chai Latte revival!  Anyone? If you’re reading this, then I’m assuming you’re on board. Tell all your friends. The chai is back. Why It’s A Smart Choice Spices have fantastic health properties. Cinnamon can … Read More

Green Lettuce Smoothie

I found a giant bag of chopped romaine lettuce marked off by 30%. We typically don’t eat that much salad around here… at least not in winter. Still, I couldn’t resist the price! I decided to try putting it in a smoothie. But before using perfectly good ingredients on something that might be awful, I did some googling to see if lettuce in smoothies is even a thing. It is so I decided to give it a go. I was delightfully surprised! You can really pack a lot of lettuce into a smoothie and not even notice the taste. Compare that to kale. … Read More

copycat orange julius

While this copycat Orange Julius tastes just like the original it’s much healthier! …and easier on the wallet 🙂 I have two requirements when I set out to duplicate a favourite popular food: a) It must taste nearly identical to the original b) It must be healthier than the original Sometimes I nail a replication right away and I wish I had a button to press that said “that was easy.” I pat myself on the back and move on to the next challenge. This one for a copycat Orange Julius didn’t turn out that way. This one took many … Read More

This month the Dietitians over at The Recipe Redux have challenged us with the following:  Fresh from the Garden: The season of bountiful produce has arrived. Whether your produce comes from the farmers’ market, a CSA share, or a plot of dirt out back, show how you are using fresh July fruits or veggies. And if you have gardening successes – or failures – please share!  I really really want to become a good gardener. This is my second year attempting to grow my own food. It’s a long process to learn because you only get one opportunity a year to … Read More
